It also depends on the type of business, and the time someone has been in business. Apparently, to some, shooting full time for stock is sustainable. I think, for most, dividing risks makes more sense. Either way, the bottom line is, that photographers need to be able to adapt their businesses to a changing market place, too.

I think an interesting observation you make is that stock sales have kept your business alive during a lean period. This is a great way of looking at stock - as a part of your business, not the whole. I think, despite the uncertain future, it is still worth photographers building a portfolio that can hopefully generate them ongoing residual income as a part of their photography business.
